What are Modes, anyway?
Modes of transport is a term used to distinguish between different ways of transportation or transporting people or goods. When we refer to transportation modes, we are broadly referring to the type of transportation and the related infrastructure facilities that make that type of transportation possible. For example, roads permit both cars and trucks to move along them. The trucks might be personal vehicles, or they might be commercial trucks of many sizes. So a road is the mode of transport, which vehicles rely on the infrastructure of. Similarly, aviation relies on the infrastructure of an airport or landing strip.
